The Divas are coming back for another round July 7 at 9/8 CT! Returning for its fourth season, E!, WWE and Bunim-Murray Productions continue their look inside the lives of the women of the sports-entertainment giant with “Total Divas.”
Cameras once again showcase the professional and personal lives of the WWE Divas. Between balancing family, maintaining romantic relationships and constantly fighting for the spotlight, the Divas are up against the odds. However, their unique lifestyles bring them together in a bond of sisterhood like no other.
“Total Divas” is produced by WWE and Bunim-Murray Productions. Jon Murray, Gil Goldschein, Jeff Jenkins and Russell Jay are Executive Producers for Bunim-Murray Productions. Kevin Dunn is Executive Producer for WWE.
Does Paige have a boyfriend? Yes! Or at least she does in thesecondhalf of E!’s double-sized “Total Divas” Season 3 Finale, in which The Diva of Tomorrow has officially claimed Bradley as her boo and even floated the idea of moving in together only a month into their relationship. Understandably, Bradley’s a bit taken aback and attempts to stall for time by telling Paige she has to meet his mom first. All good, says the Diva, and a family gathering is soon arranged wherein everything spirals downward fast. First, Bradley’s mom is taken aback by Paige’s outgoing nature. Then, Paige’s rapid-fire hints about the move-in situation are all but ignored by Bradley, who it turns out was previously married, something he neglected to tell Paige. (It’s like Nikki and Cena, but in reverse!) When Paige presses Bradley to lay his cards on the table, he admits he’s not ready to move in together and the two part on questionable terms.
Meanwhile, in the land of “All Red Everything,” Eva Marie comes across several endorsement and tie-in opportunities, including a hair extension line, thanks to the moving and shaking of Jonathan as her “husbandger.” Jonathan’s treatment of Eva, her friends and associates during photo shoots, though, leaves a lot to be desired. Eventually, it turns out Eva’s ventures might land her in hot water as they’re unsanctioned by WWE’s legal team, and she attempts to bail while she still can. After Jonathan forces her to press on, she blasts him with the revelation she can’t reconcile his forceful business tactics with his behavior as a husband, leaving their relationship in jeopardy, too.
However, unlike previous season finales, Nikki Bella and John Cena are doing A-OK! The only relationship in danger there is that between The Bellas and WWE itself as their contracts come to an end and the prospect of a three-year re-up is floated before them. With baby fever gripping Brie and opportunities outside the ring knocking at Nikki’s door, the twins are seriously debating hanging up their boots even after Nikki wins the Divas Championship at Survivor Series. As the season comes to a close, the sisters agree that their chance to pursue other ventures is rapidly thinning and they have to strike while the iron’s hot. The Bellas shockingly inform WWE officials that, while no departure date is set, their days as Divas are officially numbered!
Does Paige have a boyfriend? No, at least not during the first half of E!’s double-sized “Total Divas” Season 3 Finale. She does, however, have a guy pal of some vaguely romantic nature, a soft-spoken singer named Bradley who joins the “Three Amigas” party crew on a Key West, Fla., getaway. Bradley’s a hit among the ladies, but Paige’s hot-and-cold overtures toward him leave the poor guy questioning whether or not she’s got him pegged as a legitimate boyfriend. The situation degenerates quickly when he brings it up to her and is brutally shot down. With the Amigas’ support, Paige rolls the dice later on by admitting her hesitation to commit to an official relationship thanks to a previous, ill-fated romance, and Paige and Bradley end the episode on amicable terms.
The Bellas, meanwhile, are at the center of yet another familial dustup when brother JJ accidentally sends a private picture meant for his wife to Nikki and Brie. The twins are understandably horrified, but Nikki can’t resist showing the image to some extended family members who happen to be in the room when they receive it. That drives JJ into a full-on fit, and Brie takes justice into her own hands by unlocking Nikki’s Instagram and posting her mushy, homemade Valentine’s Day card to John Cena all over the Internet. Turnabout being fair play, Nikki can’t get too mad, but she isn’t exactly thrilled about it either, and she elects to let it slide even as she secretly plots her revenge.
With Natalya and Tyson Kidd back together, you know what that means: The cats are back! Makavelli and Louis enter the equation once again as potential Internet sensations, an idea Nattie catches on to after meeting Grumpy Cat (and her managers) backstage at Raw. They decide to have the little guys groomed to better prep them for viral stardom, but the tidy-up is a total hatchet job, and it appears Internet stardom will have to wait for the time being.
Much as it seemed like Natalya and Tyson Kidd were never, ever, ever getting back together (like, ever), this week’s “Total Divas” on E! officially brings our star-crossed Canadians back into each other’s orbit, capping off their recent interactions with an official reconciliation over a romantic dinner. All is well until the passive aggressiveness starts up again, thanks to the WWE audience’s chants of “Nattie’s Husband” that have plagued Tyson since his return. Natalya floats the idea of a modeling career as something to help him get out of her shadow, or at least give him a career path to call his own. Tyson “Blue Steels” the hell out of a test run photo shoot, which Nattie smiles and nods her way through despite the incorporation of two female models. That she eventually voices her concerns about her husband potentially being half-naked and hanging around half-naked women is no surprise. What is surprising is that Tyson agrees with her; the whole modeling thing isn’t his bag, and he decides that being Nattie’s husband, in all respects, is just fine with him.
Being Cameron’s dad, on the other hand, seems a bit more of a stressful affair, since he’s meeting Vinnie’s family for the first time. Cameron decides to spruce him up with some suit shopping and a trip to the dentist to fix his teeth so he can look as presentable as possible. Papa Cameron, whose name is Forrest, ultimately declines the suit and the dental procedure won’t be done in time, so he shows up to the big family gathering in his natural element, leather coat a-flowin’ and social charm oozing from every word. He does misinterpret Vinnie’s request for his blessing to marry Cameron as a confirmation his daughter is already engaged, which makes his post-dinner toast a tad confusing, but everyone seems happy in the end and Cameron’s just ashamed she was afraid to let her dad be his usual, charming self.
And speaking of being yourself, Paige is back in the limelight for another misadventure, this one involving the potential application of a rather tremendous chest tattoo as a tribute to her mother. The idea is nixed almost immediately by WWE brass, whose supposed authority over Paige’s body doesn’t sit well with the so-called Anti-Diva one bit. So, despite being shot down by her boss and her father, Paige stops by a tattoo shop and is about one second away from getting inked before Rosa Mendes and Alicia Fox, who are worried the impulse will cost Paige her job, call in Nattie for help. Paige settles for a small tat on her thumbs, and remains secure in the knowledge she has plenty of time to do reckless stuff that nobody else approves of. For now, though, she’s just going to keep her job, thanks.
Good news! This week’s “Total Divas” is, dare we say, kind of a much-needed romp in spots after last week’s emotional sledgehammer. That does tend to be the case when two of the three main plots involve Bella bickering and an Eva Marie scheme that involves an eight-pound burger.
That insurmountable hunk of meat comes into play during Eva’s jaunt to Vegas for a family vacation —the first such gathering of her extended family in roughly 20 years. Given her father’s continuing health issues, Eva worries he’s planned the trip as a sort of last hurrah, so she and her brothers organize an epic bucket list including skydiving, racecar driving and that big burger that does little more than bring everyone to the brink of exhaustion. When her dad catches wind of the plan, he’s less than happy: not because of the sentiment behind it (he’s actually quite moved), but he’d rather his family stop treating him like he’s got one foot out the door. Done and done.
Nikki Bella, meanwhile, is undergoing a one-woman spending spree on all sorts of preposterously priced high-end luggage, which causes Brie to tsk-tsk her sister over a lack of planning for her future (not to mention a perceived reliance on boyfriend John Cena for her more extravagant purchases). Some head-butting aside, Brie organizes a sit-down with a financial planner so her sister can be shown the error of her ways, but a twist ensues: It’s actually Brie who the guy’s more worried about, since Nikki’s real estate license gives her a source of long-term income outside of the ring, while Brie’s planned post-WWE track — motherhood — doesn’t.
In our one big heart-wrencher of the week, Natalya is forced to reach out to estranged husband Tyson Kidd once again, this time after a flood all but destroys her parents’ home. Despite what seems like an initial hesitance to re-enter his in-laws’ orbit, Kidd ends up coming up big when he recruits a buddy to completely overhaul the damaged house in a matter of days. The results are breathtaking, and Natalya — with sage advice, as ever, from Naomi — begins to think in earnest that her marriage might be worth saving.
This was not an easy episode. Every so often, “Total Divas” likes to take a break from all the revelry and weddings and arguments about the pronunciation of “barbed wire” to just completely punch its viewers in the gut and, well, this was one of those weeks. About two-thirds of the episode centered around some kind of lingering emotional trauma for our Divas, so let’s tear off the proverbial Band-Aid so we can get to the healing warmth of a Brie Mode-fueled caper through Europe.
Dealing with matters of the heart this week is Alicia Fox. Up till now, the cast newbie has been a kind of merry tornado whipping her way through the show, but the wind gets taken out of her sails when her ex-boyfriend, WWE Superstar Bad News Barrett, returns to the road from injury. Unable to reconcile Barrett having moved on with the mysterious non-reason for their split in the first place, Alicia spends the episode having unpleasant physical reactions to his presence and lashing out at her friends until she bucks up and asks him why he called it quits. He’s firm, but honest in his answer — he didn’t think she was the one — and despite the sting, everyone feels OK moving on when all is said and done.
Natalya, meanwhile, is at the end of her rope with attempting to convince her father, Jim Neidhart, to deal with his health problems. He’s about as stubborn as you’d expect a guy nicknamed “The Anvil” to be about confronting his demons, and she’s so stressed she can’t get through a meal without literally bursting into tears. Therefore, she enlists Tyson Kidd to bury the hatchet and help out with a last-ditch intervention. Not only does it work, but it seems like it maybe, juuuuust maybe opens the door a tad for a Natalya-Tyson reconciliation down the road.
Whew. Now that we’ve gotten through that, let’s get to Brie Mode. It’s a simple little story, really: WWE is touring Europe and The Bellas have a particularly full docket. Nikki — having changed her tune drastically from the last time this issue came up — has put the kibosh on Brie Mode for the duration of the trip. Paige, devilish scamp that she is, is having none of this, so she enables Brie to unleash her wild side to such a degree that Nikki almost isn’t speaking to her. Go figure, Brie wrestles a perfect match despite the aftereffects of her romp. No excuses, play like a champion.
Cameron has been relatively quiet this season of “Total Divas” so far. Let’s fix that, shall we? The feisty, former Funkadactyl is invited to take part in a girls’ weekend with Alicia Fox and Rosa Mendes when Paige is called away to Malaysia for a tour. Lingering bad blood between Cameron and Foxy bubbles to the surface almost instantly, and poor Rosa is grasping at straws as the middleman (middle-Diva?) until she convinces Cameron to hash it out with Alicia after a particularly intense poolside sniping bout. Predictably, once the ladies lay their cards on the table, it’s smooth sailing from then on out.
Elsewhere, Tyson Kidd resurfaces and is as salty as ever toward wife Natalya, despite the fact that they’re an on-screen couple. Nattie’s marital blues don’t improve much when she couch-crashes with Naomi and Jimmy Uso, and in the process gets a glimpse of just how happy they are as a couple. Naomi, still the voice of reason even after she left the show, takes Natalya to task for her “pity-party” and gives her enough of a pick-me-up to keep her chugging along for the time being.
The Bella Twins, meanwhile, have begun an on-screen rivalry with a strange behind-the-scenes counterpart to go with it. While the friction from a few episodes ago has largely flamed out, Nikki’s in a mild panic over the fact that Brie is seriously considering having a child with Daniel Bryan in the near future, as such a development would split up The Bellas and dilute their burgeoning brand. Even John Cena balks at Nikki’s aversion to her sister’s potential happiness, though that doesn’t stop her from confronting Brie and Bryan over an otherwise pleasant family dinner. Unable to sway her sister’s opinion, Nikki instead probes into the idea of being able to carry a brand on her own and gets a vote of confidence from WWE execs, ensuring the Bella empire will continue for eons untold, baby or not. Long live The Bellas.
