PAIGE-TURNER: WWE star Paige discusses her new chapter in wrestling following movie success

The Sun have posted an interview article with Paige discussing a number of topics, such as Fighting with my Family, the Kabuki Warriors, Vince McMahon and more. Check it out below.

BRITISH WWE superstar Paige has revealed how the movie about her own life – Fighting With My Family, produced by The Rock – helped her begin a new chapter in her life and career.

The film tells the story of Paige’s journey from her family’s Norwich-based wrestling company WAW to the big leagues of NXT and WWE, with Florence Pugh playing the role of Paige.

The flick was based on a Channel 4 documentary about Paige’s family – her wrestler and promoter parents, Ricky Knight and Sweet Saraya, and wrestler brothers Zak and Roy Knight – which The Rock decided to turn into a feature film after seeing the doc in a hotel one night.

But Paige was hit with a series of widely-publicised personal problems after film production had begun.

The star was slapped with two drug test suspensions by WWE, was embroiled in a turbulent relationship with Alberto Del Rio, and was the victim of a notorious sex tape leak.

Paige was also put out of action for a year with a neck injury. After returning to action in late 2017, she suffered yet another injury that forced her to retire from active competition.

Speaking exclusively to Sun Sport, Paige said: “The movie was in the process of being made while I was going through those terrible two years.

“I could have lost it completely but I opened my eyes and got out of that bubble quick enough that the movie was still able to be made.

“It was a wonderful feeling to finally get to watch it and put what I’d done before completely in the past and bury it and pretty much start over again.”

Fighting With My Family – which arrives on DVD & Blu-ray on July 1 – was a huge hit with both critics and audiences.

MCMAHON FEEDBACK

While Paige says that WWE superstars continue to congratulate her on the movie, there’s one person whose reaction fans will be most interested to know about – WWE boss Vince McMahon.

Paige said: “I don’t know what Vince’s reaction to it was. But if you get a big hug from Vince McMahon you’re doing well. I saw him last week and he gave me a big hug and said, ‘I’m very happy for you.’

“I don’t know it that’s about the movie or the fact that I’m healthy. I think he probably liked it if he did watch it.”

The film does capture the importance of Paige as a pioneer in the WWE women’s division – arguably the single most important performer in driving forward the much-celebrated “women’s evolution”.

NXT matches against Aussie star Emma set a new standard for WWE women’s wrestling and she won the Divas Championship on her Raw debut against AJ Lee, a match that is recreated for the dramatic finale of Fighting With My Family.

Her career is about to be celebrated with another DVD – Paige: Iconic Matches, a collection of her best in-ring moments, also out July 1 – which also includes the famous AJ Lee match.

KABUKI WARRIORS

Since retiring from in-ring action, Paige has played the role of general manager on SmackDown and is currently managing The Kabuki Warriors tag team – Asuka and Kairi Sane.

After a strong introduction post-WrestleMania, the team have barely featured on television. This comes amid widespread criticism about the creative process of Vince McMahon and WWE.

But Paige says she can rely on McMahon and NXT boss Triple H to resolve any creative frustrations.

And she’s convinced The Kabuki Warriors can be a game changer for the women’s tag division in WWE.

Paige said: “If we don’t get used I get really frustrated because we’re a good tag team and we need to be utilised.

“Sometimes the writers have so much on their plate with everyone else’s storylines, they put things on the backburner. I have to remind them, ‘Ok, but there is a women’s tag team title… I’m like, ‘What the hell dudes? Let’s make something happen.’

“It frustrates me but once you actually get to speak with Vince and Hunter about your problems and frustrations, they’re always the first to say, ‘Let’s change this.’

“If you go up to writers it’s like talking to a brick wall sometimes, whereas if you go to Vince and Hunter they’re like, ‘If you have a problem we can change that for you.’

The Kabuki Warriors finally reappeared in a backstage segment two weeks ago. They set up a match against women’s tag champs The IIconics for a special event in Tokyo which took place yesterday. The Kabukis won the match to earn a future title shot.

Speaking before the event, Paige said: “The Kabuki Warriors can be a force to be reckoned with and that was the plan from the beginning… After the match in Tokyo hopefully we’ll get to build towards a pay-per-view, which gives the girls something to look forward to.

“So I’m happy we have a boss that really listens to us.”

Two other superstars that Paige takes pride in watching are Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville.

The duo made their main roster debuts under the leadership of Paige as the three-woman squad of Absolution.

Rose and Deville have continued to perform as a duo since and WWE seemed to be teasing a lesbian storyline between the pair last week on SmackDown. This follows Sonya Deville being front and centre of WWE’s Pride Month celebrations.

Paige said: “I’m so proud of them. I truly adore those girls. I had so much fun with them. Each week they work more and they’re so hungry. What more could you hope for in a wrestler?

“I don’t know creatively where they’re going. I just think they deserve it.”

Though Paige was a pioneer for women’s wrestling in the ring, she doesn’t see herself taking a creative role behind the scenes for the women’s division.

She said: “I have to give the writers some credit where it’s due. They have to deal with a lot, they truly do. I would not want to be in their shoes – I don’t want to be in creative.

“It’s a lot of pressure because you’ve got to make everyone happy all the time. I don’t think I have the patience to deal with everyone screaming at me all the time.”

But Paige sees herself staying with WWE in some capacity and is looking to pursue acting.

It could be a winner for the former Divas Champion. While playing the SmackDown GM, she developed her mic skills and became one of the most charismatic talkers on the show.

Paige said: “One way or another I’ll always be a part of WWE, whether it’s in front of the camera or behind the camera. I’d love to do a GM role again. I felt like I really found myself in that role. It really pushed me.

“Also, I love acting, I truly really love it. Obviously wrestling always will be my first passion but unfortunately I can’t do that anymore.”

After the popularity of Fighting With My Family, WWE could be looking to make more films about their top superstars’ lives.

Paige has an idea of which real-life stories from the women’s division would make great cinema – Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch.

Paige said: “Charlotte truly has an interesting story that no one knows about. She’s been through a lot in her personal life. She was a shy girl. She’s definitely a candidate.

“And Becky – she’s done a lot career wise. She’s gone from the underdog to being one of the biggest things in WWE right now.”

Fighting With My Family is out on digital download, DVD & Blu-ray July 1.

Paige: Iconic Matches is also out on DVD July 1.

10 Booking Steps For Paige Following Her WWE Raw Return

10 Booking Steps For Paige Following Her WWE Raw Return

Firmly entrenched on Raw from the off with her new ‘Allegiance’ group made up of Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville, how will WWE book their beloved returnee now she’s surprisingly stepped back into battle?

10. Raw Rage

Riding the wave of an explosive comeback pop, Paige was in fine form as she walked the Raw ramp milking the response from the Houston Crowd. The cheers didn’t particularly dissolve when she set her new accomplices on Mickie James, Sasha Banks and Bayley as their Number One Contender’s Fatal Four-way alongside Alicia Fox completely collapsed.

The three in the ring may technically be babyfaces, but the booking of the league on Monday Nights this year has been so pitiful that most have been reduced to shadows of their former selves, with any significant traction disappearing alongside title aspirations.

Less than a year earlier, and Bayley and Banks especially taking such a brutal beating would have been loathed by the live crowds, but the Toyota Center attendees were far too entranced by Paige’s arrival to care.

Over the upcoming weeks, the trio need to mercilessly continue their assaults until they are firmly established as a vile threat to the very fabric of Monday Night Raw. WWE established a temporary ‘Welcoming Committee’ stable on SmackDown Live! as a vehicle to establish new arrival Charlotte Flair as a blue brand babyface. They’re capable of resetting the character moulds with similar beatdowns. Continue reading

Notable Survivor Series absentees

Notable Survivor Series absentees

The Survivor Series is absolutely packed with talent and mouthwatering matches – but there are some big names who are currently not scheduled to appear on the show.

In this era of expecting the unexpected in WWE, it is almost guaranteed that there will be some twists and turns at the hotly-anticipated pay-per-view in Atlanta.

Of the superstars not currently booked at the annual elimination extravaganza, who may yet play a pivotal part in the event?

Notable Survivor Series absentees

Paige

Several social media postings from WWE superstars confirmed the appearance of Paige backstage at Monday Night Raw in Atlanta this week, prompting widespread speculation she was about to be added to the Raw team for the women’s elimination match.

Instead, it was Bayley who beat Mickie James and Dana Brooke in a triple threat match to book her spot in Alicia Fox’s squad.

However… the next night, Charlotte Flair won the SmackDown title by beating Natalya, meaning it will be The Queen who faces Alexa Bliss in the champion-against-champion match in Houston.

Natalya will not compete in the match, freeing up a spot for an as-yet-unknown competitor.

Paige has been training at the Performance Center for some time and her presence at television this week appears to be almost guaranteed.

But if recent WWE history has taught us anything, it is that now – more than ever – the unexpected should be expected. A monumental swerve could be pulled – there could be a roster switch, a one-off comeback from a retired veteran, an NXT call-up, anything.

Nothing will be known for sure until the competitor’s music hits on what promises to be an evening of shocks and surprises up and down the card.

Major Update About Paige’s WWE Comeback Revealed

Major Update About Paige’s WWE Comeback Revealed

All week long, the WWE Universe was watching and waiting for Paige to make her WWE return on Raw or SmackDown Live. It’s been over a year since she appeared on WWE television and so much has changed. A lot of people remain hopeful that she will be returning this Sunday for WWE Survivor Series. That remains a possibility, but it’s coming to light that WWE officials have some specific plans for her WWE comeback.

It’s being reported that WWE officials were never planning for Paige to make her return to WWE television this week or at ‘Survivor Series.‘ Apparently, the plan has always been for her to wait until after the PPV to make her comeback. On paper, that means the WWE Universe should continue watching next week to see if Paige returns to Monday Night Raw or SmackDown Live. At this point, she could return to either brand.

It’s important to note that WWE officials have made a ton of changes to the ‘Survivor Series‘ card, so it still isn’t out of the question for Paige to return on Sunday night. It’s been rumored that Nikki Bella may also be in the running for the final spot on Team SmackDown. WWE officials could go with her, Natalya or Paige, but the latter would likely receive the strongest reaction since the fans are waiting for her return to WWE.

The most important thing is if Paige is being kept off WWE television until after ‘Survivor Series,‘ there’s a good chance that WWE officials have something huge prepared for her creatively. Paige is expected to get a major push upon her return. On paper, Asuka is expected to dominate Raw for the foreseeable future and a run on SmackDown Live could be a great thing for Paige considering how deep the roster already is there.

Hopefully, her WWE comeback begins sooner rather than later because the fans will continue to raise their expectations every week that Paige doesn’t return. It’s unlikely that she’ll be winning a Women’s Title over the next couple months, but she is expected to make a major impact on Raw or SmackDown. Paige has not been on WWE television for a long time, so it’s really important that she makes her presence known as fast as possible. The perfect time may be at ‘Survivor Series,‘ but WWE officials have the final decision to make.

From the WWE Rumor Mill: Paige could return at Survivor Series

From the WWE Rumor Mill: Paige could return at Survivor Series

Paige has been out of action for a long time and although she really hasn’t left the public view, the former Divas Champion has been unable to compete due to neck issues coupled with a scoliosis issue.

But now that WWE’S Anti-Diva seems to be working out at the WWE Performace Center and showing up to Raw it looks like it will only be a matter of time before the WWE Universe will be seeing her again.

WWE.com has put up a story which could lead some to believe they’re prepping fans for a surprise return and some people reading between the lines have assumed they’re talking about Paige.

In case you didn’t know…

If you could put all of the controversies on the backburner for a moment and analyze Paige for her in-ring work alone you would be hardpressed to find a better WWE Superstar. Her legacy in the pro wrestling business is so dense that it even warranted the upcoming “Fighting With My Family” film from WWE Studios and Seven Bucks Productions.

Now it looks like the first-ever NXT Women’s Champion is set to return to action and it could be an amazing experience if WWE books it properly.

The Heart of the matter…

WWE.com recently put up an article about the Women’s Survivor Series match in Houston. Since Charlotte Flair picked up the SmackDown Women’s Title from Natalya this apparently didn’t automatically place The Queen Of Harts into The Nature Girl’s vacant slot.

It is said a decision will be made about the fifth and final member of Team SmackDown on the night of Survivor Series. Since practically every woman on the SmackDown roster is already booked for the event (except Natalya) the assumption is that WWE will bring in someone on board. They would have just announced Natalya as the fifth member if that was not the case.

Nikki Bella isn’t out of the picture, after all, she was unable to compete in the Women’s Survivor Series match last year and was ironically replaced by Natalya who is the same woman seemingly being snubbed this year.

But many people are under the assumption this announcement would fall perfectly in line with Paige’s imminent return.

What’s next?

It’s been rumoured for a while that Paige would return to the Blue Brand. Seeing how Raw just got Asuka many people including Bryan Alvarez and Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline have speculated this would be the case.

Whenever Paige does return to WWE, it needs to be a big deal because the last thing WWE needs is another lacklustre return.

Survivor Series would be as good of a place as any to make that happen. I just can’t help but worry her sizzling heat will soon cool down if WWE doesn’t do something interesting with her immediately.

3 reasons Paige lucked out in not returning on this week’s RAW

3 reasons Paige lucked out in not returning on this week’s RAW

Paige not returning on the go-home RAW show to Survivor Series may have been a blessing in disguise.

This week’s Raw saw a big return, but it wasn’t the one the WWE Universe had been expecting. The anticipated arrival of the original Anti-Diva, Paige, never came. We were served up instead with the King of Kings, Triple H.

Paige not coming back on this week’s RAW was a move that could help her in the long run.

Reason 1: SmackDown needs her more

Originally, reports suggested that Paige would be headed to SmackDown when she returned, even though she’d originally been assigned to RAW before her lengthy absence. Only in the past 72 hours or so has there been a fever pitch of speculation that she’d return to Monday nights. That hasn’t happened thus far. It would be better for now if it ultimately doesn’t.

With RAW getting Asuka, Paige’s presence would be very welcome on SmackDown, whose women’s division is in sore need of a fresh face. Paige has a better chance of standing out there than she does on RAW at the moment, where Asuka is set to have a titanic showdown with Alexa Bliss sooner or later, leaving Paige without much to do.

If the purported Horsewomen match happens at WrestleMania, that would surely put Paige in a place to carry the blue brand’s women’s title program into the Show of Shows.

Additionally, putting her on RAW’s Survivor Series team would have made for a less entertaining match, as with Asuka and Nia Jax fighting in the red corner, the teams are already lopsided. Paige would have made it even more so, with Charlotte now the SmackDown Women’s Champion.

Speaking of Survivor Series, Paige lucked out in another way by not being on RAW’s side…

Reason 2: She’d be overshadowed on team red at Survivor Series

Should Paige have joined RAW’s team at Survivor Series, what then? She’d likely have just been in the match and gotten eliminated.

With the spotlight likely going to Asuka and Nia Jax, there wouldn’t be a lot for Paige to do on RAW’s side. She’d feel more like a third wheel than a huge part of the team.

Conversely, if she were to go to SmackDown and finds herself on their team in lieu of Charlotte, she’d have a bigger spotlight on her. She’d instantly be one of its strongest players that would make the contest less unequal and could well be the star of team blue. In turn, it would boost her standing more going forward.

Reason 3: It was too late

Survivor Series has had a big number of late card changes, most of them for the better, but Paige returning just in time for the show would likely have felt a bit hollow in the end.

Instead of saving her return for an angle which she could have been a star in, it would have been lessened by putting her into a multi-woman match she was unlikely to shine brightly in any way (at least should she have returned to RAW instead of SmackDown).

A meaningful singles program waiting for her after her big return would be more compelling to watch over the long term, whether she ultimately winds up on RAW or SmackDown. She’s been away for so long that there are a number of opponents she’s never faced before waiting for her.

A return against one of them would make more of an impact than being randomly inserted into a Survivor Series team with little time left to build her up.

Perhaps that could have happened had she returned a month ago, but there’s too little time left to make the most of her comeback now. She’s not on the level of a Triple H where a return makes an immediate seismic impact regardless of the circumstances.

Let’s see what happens after Survivor Series.
